In order to function in life, children need to develop right relationships with others and especially with their God. The gospel stories model the expectations they are to live by as Christians. Prayer is a way of expressing their beliefs, their needs and their faith. Having prayer in their lives gives children an avenue to turn to someone greater than themselves. Students have the opportunity to celebrate important events in the life of the Church and in their own lives through the use of rituals. Through community outreach, children learn to give back to society and to reach out to the poor and oppressed of the world. Service gives them a sense of worth in the larger community of life.
Religious instruction is Gospel-based. The program is centered on God as Creator, Jesus as Teacher and Holy Spirit as Inspiration. Students are taught the importance of prayer and how to pray. The doctrine taught focuses on the main beliefs of the Catholic Faith. Morals and Ethics are emphasized in grades pre-k through six. In keeping with our Mercy traditions, community outreach is an integral part of the religious instruction in every grade. Children are exposed to stories in scripture and are taught how to live out the message of Jesus in their daily lives. Since our Mercy Charism impels us to act out of a sense of social justice we find it necessary to impart these important lessons to our students. The key concepts of our program are:
- unite ourselves with God in whose image we were created
- follow Jesus' greatest commandment "to love one another"
- care for those most in need as directed by Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy
- make formal and informal prayer a part of our lives
